I'm having a similar issue, but I'm going to preface this with Android Auto DID work fairly well before the 34.4.A.2.19 upgrade to Android 8.0.0 Oreo. After the update, Google Play Services tends to get "stuck" connecting to Android Auto and then will not connect at all unless I do the following:

Shut down the phone.

Wait for my Pebble Time smartwatch to notice that it has disconnected from the phone's bluetooth.

Reboot the phone.

Clear all running applications once the phone has booted.

If I do these, then it the phone has a higher chance of launching Android Auto when I connect it to the USB cable. However, it will sometimes fail to start multiple times in some cases. Or it might work okay multiple times in a row and then stop without warning. It's quite frustrating not knowing if it will fail on me when I need it to work.

I have also tried uninstalling updates to Google Play Services and clearing its data, but that doesn't seem to make a difference.

I'm hoping that the 34.4.A.2.32 update corrects this, but it is not available for me yet. I don't know if this will be of any help to the rest of you, but it's worth a shot. If you are on an older version of Android and it's not connecting, then I'm not sure if this will help at all.

I wanted to follow up since my previous post and say that 34.4.A.2.32 did actually correct the issue for me. After that the phone would connect most of the time. However I've since moved on to the Xperia XZ2 Compact so I rather forgot about this thread.

One thing I have noticed, and this is also the case with the XZ2C, is that there is a Google Car Mode Service that will sometimes start and fail to launch Android Auto. It has the same icon as AA and pops up in the notifications just before the AA icon pops up. If this service fails, it gets stuck and will prevent AA from launching again. Even if you unplug the USB cable and plug it back in, it is still locked up. You will know if you're in this state because the icon for it will remain and state "Connected to your car", but it actually isn't and you can even disconnect the USB cable and it will still say it.

Rebooting the phone will clear this service. You can also go into Developer Options and terminiate the running service manually which will also clear it. I'm not sure what causes it, but it may have something to do with the USB cable itself as it more frequently happens when I move the phone while it's connecting. So I suggest looking to see if this icon appears for others. You might also want to try a different USB cable.

I have the same issue with my new XZ2.

Android Auto used to work like a charm with my Z5. Since I own an XZ2, most of the time the connection fails.

I have the same icon stuck in the notification bar.

Sometimes it works for a while and the connection can be lost some minutes or hours later.

I noticed sometimes the car cannot read the USB content : it says "Reading USB ... ". It ends with an error.

Bluetooh audio is working fine.

I hope Sony will fix the issue.

If the Android Auto icon is stuck in the notification bar even if Android Auto is closed and the USB is not connected, then it is stuck in the hung state that I described and will never connect. You will need to terminate the service or reboot the phone to clear it. I have enabled Developer Options on my Xperia XZ2 Compact to allow me to manually terminate the Car Mode Service as it is hidden.

I still have to do this from time to time and believe that the issue is the USB cable itself. If the cable is positioned or bent a certain way, the service will hang on launch. So I have been taking care to not move the phone while it is connecting. After the initial connection and the service is running on both the phone and the car, things tend to be okay and even if it disconnects, the service terminates. I'm still using the cable that came with my Xperia X Compact, so I intend to swap it for the one from the XZ2 Compact.

I would suggest trying a different USB cable if you have one. Also enabling Developer Options would allow you to clear it, but caution is recommended if you do that. It opens up a lot of other options that are best not messed with if you don't know what you're doing.

Okay I have the same problem with the Android auto and my Sony Xperia Ultra XA1 one there's a box that comes up when it's asking for you to transfer files what happens it going to be another box that comes up I don't know how to bring it up I just figured it out what you're going to do is Click do not see this message again because what your phone is doing is picking up to the Android auto and the computer system in the car at the computer so that's why it keeps disconnecting because it wants to transfer files so once you click on that box that says do not show me message again it's going to stop

After some further testing, I think I found why I was having issues with my USB cable. The cable wouldn't hold in correctly facing a certain direction. If I flipped the USB-C connector and plugged it in opposite of how I have been, it holds in firmer and does not disconnect as frequently on Android Auto start. It has been popping up some messages regarding allowing a USB connection each time after upgrading to Android 9, but it will still launch AA even if I miss the prompt. That might just be for access to the memory card for reading it like a USB drive for music.

Hi,

I have the ame problem.

The smartphone connects successfully with the car via USB. The application launches on both car and smartphone.

Once I start to use Android Auto, lets say in the maps application, navigating to a destination it does not take long until the graphics is garbled and pixelated. Drawing of graphics seems to be bugged in some way. The only way to reset the graphics and trigger a complete redraw of the screen is to hit the Home button and return to the main menu. Then entering the maps application again will give you a redrawn screen that will start to garble as time passed. Seconds/Minutes later the screen is completly messed up again and unusable.

This seem to be a problem on the smartphone side and not the car software. Other devices seem to work just fine.
