Well i've solved the problem, pretty sure it was a DHCP issue with the BT Home Hub router but i've switched ISP now am now with SKY and they have given me a netgear router and i have absolutley no problem whatsoever!

One thing i did notice was when i connected to the netgear router i was asked by Vista what connection i wanted. I had a choice between Home, Work, or Public. I never had this with the BT Home Hub router.

I am a geek but i have no idea why i was asked connecting to the Netgear router and not the BT Home hub router, i'll leave that question for the boffins!

Hello everyone, i hope you can help. Yesterday i purchased a Sony XL-301 and as with all new PC's i buy i remove norton internet security in order to put on my own. However when i do this, My Network connection icon in the bottom right hand corner says that i have "local access only" not the usual "Local and Internet access".

So i disconnect from the network and reconnect and all is well, but i ain't doing that everytime i turn my PC on!!! lol

Plz help... your my only hope (Norton Customer Support in India say it is nothing to do with them!)

If you assign a shortcut key so the attached file it should save you from having to go through all the connect/disconnect stuff although you will have to run it everytime you have the problem because its not a fix.

Hi TimonUK,

It would appear that you new firewall is blocking connection. Have you tried disabling this program in the startup items (msconfig) and then re-booting?

If you then have connection you will need to create an advanced rule for the firewall to accept all incoming and outgoing connections for your router address.

If you let us know which software firewall you have installed, and which router you are using, someone may be able to provide detailed instructions on creating this rule.

Alternatively updating the LAN/WLAN driver may solve your problem. Again please provide further details of your connection and network card and the current driver - you will find this information under the network adaptor properties in Device Manager.

Thanks for the advice.

I am using Windows Live OneCare and a BT Home Hub although it seems under further research that this is a Vista Bug to do with wireless connections and is not a firewall issue as it happens even when no firewall is active. Something to do with Private and Public networks and Home not being on the list, ee i don't know....... One day it'll be fixed, i hope!!

Right here goes,

I've done a completely fresh install on my XL-301,
I have a Sony Vaio Laptop running XP and all is well with that,
I have a HP PC with a BT Voager 1050 USB wireless network stick and all is well with that until i wake vista up from sleep, then it needs a disable/enable,
when i use my ethernet conection on the XL-301 all is well,
when i use my Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection on the XL-301 all is not well,
i have updated the driver for this device and still all is not well,
The problem is that my network connection states that i am connected to an unidentified network and i have local access only,
then i disconnect from the network, reconnect and all is well again,
sometimes, only sometimes, when i try to repair the connection i get "renew the i.p address", after it does this all is well again,
more often than not though i get, windows has found a problem but cannot fix it automatically, it does not however tell me what the problem it is that it has found,
This issue happens exactly the same with norton installed, onecare installed, windows firewall and even no firewall at all.

Conclusion in my opinion.

Firewall definatley not at fault,
Vista possibly at fault but not likely,
BT Home hub more likely than vista to be at fault,
Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG at more fault than vista but less than BT Home Hub,
Some stupid setting being wrong, probably!

Surely Sony have tested this machine......

Help! I HAVE A VERY LONG ETHERNET CABLE RIGHT NOW RUNNING THROUGH THE HOUSE WHICH IS DOING ME NO FAVOR IN THE "KEEP THE WIFE HAPPY" DEPARTMENT.

Thanks,

TimonUK

On a side note though i have previosly installed this driver and let windows do the installation in the usual way, i.e. update driver > browse for driver > here it is> go, but this time i used the intel installer i.e. prodfx.exe and like i say, touch wood, its working!!

Thankyou sooooo much!

TimonUK

This is soooooo annoying!!!, the only way to make it work is to use the .bat file that someone provided earlier which i have now on my desktop and have renamed, "KICKIT.bat"

HEEEEELLLLLPPPP!!!!!
