This appeared after laptop went into standby, i cant clear it at all, any ideas please?
Could be overheating in the GPU, does the problem go away when rebooted?

Try reinstalling the graphics driver from here
Uninstall the previous one first by going to device manager and right-click -> uninstall on the video driver. Reboot. When it comes back up go back to device manager and find the Video device (Standard VGA) and right-click -> install and browse to the driver you have just downloaded.
Hope this might have more effect but somehow i doubt it.
If it doesn't then sony support will be the next port of call.

Sadly not necessarily.
You still have the output to the inbuilt screen that could be to blame. Is the green bar there as soon as its on. ie. is it there before even the VAIO logo is shown?
Could be a dead panel but it is very unlikely.
How many pixels wide is the bar?

Green bar is instant as soon a screen gets power, it is one pixel wide, i had this a while ago and it cleared, it seems to be linked to hibernation mode, when i close laptop, but it always cleared on reboot.
Well i had a stuck pixel once. Left it somewhere warm for a day then tried it again and it fixed itself. Its work a try.

I would still advise talking to VAIO-Link about it.
Thanks, is there any particular link you would recommend for them?, the laptop is out of warranty, so i was not expecting too much support from that direction!
Thanks fro taking the time to reply.
