Unable to answer calls

When an incoming call comes in, the phone rings but there is no option to answer it. If I open 'Phone' there is nothing to suggest the call is incoming and only after they called has hung up does it show up in missed calls

Utterly ridiculous having a smart phone that does not allow you to answer basic phone calls!

I have tried following previous suggestions mentioned on other posts but to no avail. My phone is the xz1 compact

Have you tried restarting the phone in safe mode and test it? (to discard any third party app fault).

I have tried that now, thanks.

The incoming calls showed on screen in safe mode. How can I work out which app is stopping the calls showing?

@chickensmith; Unfortunately there is no specific way to find out which app is causing it, try uninstalling app by app starting with the ones you installed since this problem begun and that you gave phone permissions (you can check wich ones have phone permissions under settings >apps and notifications >advanced >permissions).
