Can't make or receive calls after factory reset

Was having problems with Z5 compact. Did factory reset. Now cannot receive or make voice calls. Confirmed not in airplane mode. Confirmed cell provider. Tried to disable call barring but I get "network or SIM card error."  Help!

@Jlthoman

Is it possible to try another SIM card on your phone?

I put my sim in another phone and it worked fine.

Hi @Jlthoman, sorry to hear about this. Slightly_frowning_Face

As @Quester recommended, trying another SIM card in your phone is a way to see if this is related to the SIM card/service provider or not.

Are you able to register on your service providers network? You can do a search for available networks in Settings > More > Mobile networks > Service providers. Wait for the search to be finished and tap on your service providers network.

Let us know how it goes!

This is exactly what's happened to me on an Xperia M4 ("Can't make or receive calls after factory reset")- the SIM card is ok (already tested in other phones) the fault seems to be with the Xperia. Is there a solution to this or anything that can be tried?

Ps. Texts work ok both sending and receiving, it's only calls in and out that dont work!

Hi @prwright55, sorry to hear about this and I apologize for the late reply.

Have you tried with another SIM card in the Xperia M4 Aqua? You can also see my previous post on how to search for available networks and then try and manually register on one of the available ones.

Should you still experience the same behaviour after doing the two things above, try performing a software repair using Xperia Companion. This will delete all data stored on the internal storage of the device and reinstall the latest available software again.

Make sure that you create a backup using Xperia Companion before you start with the repair as data is being deleted.

Let me know how it goes!

Thanks Jonas, I tried everything, numerous factory resets and Sony companion software update, eventually I decided the phone possibly had some sort of internal hardware fault connected with the signal (maybe an antenna problem?) it seemed to have a strong signal but did it really? I realised it was taking much too long to search and lock into mobile networks, and sometimes it failed completely other times it seemed to lock in ok but still wouldn't call or receive. So it's been returned to where I bought it for a refund. It definitely wasn't the SIM card. Pity as I rather liked it.

Cheers Pete

Hi again @prwright55, very sorry to hear that you weren't able to get this resolved even after performing a software repair.

The next step would be to get in touch with your Local support team to have it sent in to an authorized service centre, however since you have already returned the device and you have gotten your money back, this is obviously not an option.

I hope that you found another device that you are pleased with!

The Sony Xperia range of the previous few years seem to have an anomoly, possibly involving the Android 7.0 firmware upgrade such that Voice over LTE (VoLTE) does not work on all bands of 4g (LTE). A Sim card  that will work reliably in other phones with not allow calls in my Xperia Z5 with android v7.1.1.

Having browsed various forums it's plain to see than numerous Sony Xperia users are experiencing problems after upgrading their older Sony phone to Android v7.0. Here in Australia the problem manifests on the Vodaphone network where the provider has advised that there may be an issue with Sony phones and suggest a back end change to limit my account to 3G for voice calls. Vodaphone uses LTE B5 here in Australia so this may the affected band. Testing with a Telstra simcard indicated the phone could make and receive calls on LTE B3 and possibly B7 LTE bands.

It's  a wonder that now in Sep 2019 Sony still havn't released a firmware upgrade to solve their LTE compatibility issue on ther phones of the last few years, many of which are still in use
