I have exactly the same problem and have tried the solutions suggested but to no avail. Sony has to come up with a solution!!!! No more excuses about SD cards (mine is new and fine, l have tested the card).
This is not acceptable, especially when encouraged to use your phone to replace your camera. I have images I need to retrieve (like the other thousands of users who have the same problem which is coming to light) Sony must take responsibility and come up with a solution asap!!!
I'm having the exact same problem on my Xperia XZ. Can't view pictures for SD card. Have changed camera settings back to save in internal storage but that sort of defeats the object of having a 128gb micro SD card. Any advice welcome. Thanks
I have just thought, I changed my micro SD card for a new 128gb one this week. I transferred all my old pictures on to it and I can open those but any new ones I have taken I cannot open correctly to share or edit. I have changed the camera storage setting default back to internal and that works fine. Any idea what may be causing this. I'm sure it is probably something simple but I've no idea why.
*bump*
if you didnt reformat your SD card, just try connecting to PC then right click on your device and select import pictures and videos, this atleast save your pictures.. but the app... no idea how to retrieve...
Phone: Sony Xperia XZ premium
Version: Android 8.0.0
Have the same problem as everybody else. Bought an SD-card and copied the images from the phone to the SD-card, now all images on the SD-card can't be shown in the album app (I can only see black images).
I'm now coping all the images to my computer (most of them already in the OneDrive, but just to be shure), after this will do what is answerd by Sony in the first post, hope this helps else I have a SD-card for nothing since everything needs to be on the internal memory.
I suspect it has something to do with the transfer from phone to SD-card. Also had the option save images directly on SD-card, but then saving an images when taking it takes a lot of time (read/write problems?).
Hope there will be a solution for this in the future.

An additon to my previous post, just removed the SD-card and enterd it into a SD-card reader (for quicker transfer since trough phone it was really really slow).
Just looking to the file system and it looks like this:

Where the DCIM.0 folder contains the same folders and images as the DCIM folder. The same for the 2 download folders and picture folders. How can this be caused? Why is this?
I bought a Sony L1 on contract about two weeks ago. Transfered pictures and videos but it does not show. I saved pictures from my facebook and i cant seem to find it either. It is quite annoying because i did update my apps and tried a list of things i searched on Google. I regret buying a Sony should have sticked to Huawei.
I have this issue and disheartened to see its one that has been going on for years with no solution.
