Headphone works only with one channel

I run a xperia Z1 compact on android 5.1.1. Since updating the headphone has only music on one side. The headphone is alright, checked it on the hifi. If using the built in speaker both channels can be heard (found out using the balance function of poweramp). Can it be a software problem? Or do I have to send the phone for a hardware check?
