Mic not working
Hi @JJ747, welcome to our forum and I'm sorry to hear about this.
Is this something that you have started to notice very recently, for example after updating your device or installing a new application?
To start with I would recommend that you test the microphone outside of a call to see if you are able to hear your own voice when the recording is being played. You can do this test in Settings > About phone > Diagnostics > Test > Microphone.
If you aren't able to hear your own recording being played in the second part of the test, try rebooting your phone in safe mode and do the test again when downloaded applications are disabled.
If you can hear your voice, you can try and change the preferred network mode in your device. To do that, go to Settings > More > Mobile networks > Preferred network type > Only GSM.
Let me know how it goes!
I did try to put my phone on safe mode and did the microphone test but still nothing is coming out. I cant hear any recordings.
Hi @TrixieChan, sorry to hear about this.
If there was no change while the device was rebooted in safe mode, I would recommend that you try and perform a software repair using Xperia Companion.
This will delete all data stored on the internal storage and reinstall the latest available software for your device, so it's important that you create a backup using Xperia Companion before you start with the repair.
When the repair has been completed, restore the backup to your device and make a few phone calls to see if there has been any change.
Should there be no change at all and the microphone is still not working, the device will need to be examined at an authorized service centre and your Local support team will assist you further with this.

Hi i am also strugling with my Mic. When i make phone calls the people say it sounds as if im in the far distance so they cant hear me. I have factory resetted my phone and updated it. I also tried putting it on gsm, I did the mic test and the mic sounds fine.It sounds fine also when i make videos.
Hi @Foxstrike89, sorry to hear about this.
When you are recording videos, or if you have the device in loudspeaker mode during a call, the second microphone will be used and not the main microphone.
If you have a friend, colleague or family member that is using a SIM card from a different operator, it would be good if you could test their SIM card in your device and see if there is any change.
Should there be no change, try performing a software repair using Xperia Companion. This is a bit different from a factory reset, as it will also reinstall the latest available software in the device.
As always when resetting your device, make sure that you create a backup, before you start with the repair.

Hi Sony.
On my Xperia Z5 Compact (only two months old) the microphone doesn't seem to work in calls.
Usually a restart works, but I cannot do that prior to answering the phone, rendering only a solution for when I a) am going to make an outgoing call b) have the time to reboot the device.
It seems to be some kind of software crash, and weirly enough I can record sound in the Easy Voice Recorder app while this problem occurs.
I have tried the following:
- Tests in the 'about' section. The phone passes the microphone test
- Disabling the 'OK Google'-thingy which I read elsewhere can block the use of the microphone (???!)
- Of course turning the phone off and back on
How do I resolve this issue so that my phone works as a phone and not just as a mini tablet?
With kind regards

Hi @T-H, sorry to hear about that.
It sounds as you said very weird that the microphone test passes each time.
Just to make sure that this has nothing to do with the network, do you have the possibility to try with a different SIM card in the device? If you can't do that, try and adjust the preferred network type to GSM only to see if that makes any difference.
You can this setting in Settings > More > Mobile networks > Preferred network type > GSM only.

The solution became to change the standard phone app. It simply seems that (parts of) the Sony phone app crashes, rendering the microphone useless in the app.
How weird is that?
Anyway, I've found a solution and that's fine.
But I am, of course, puzzled that Sony has chosen to write their own, faulty app when Google provides one that works, NQA.
Well.
I thought I had it fixed by changing phone app, but no.
The microphone just somehow stops working after a while.
A restart will fix it for at while, but that's highly inconvenient - especially when I want to be able to receive calls.
What could possible be wrong?
With kind regards
