What is the function of red button?

I have z1 compact with lollipop 5.1.1 and my doubt is what is the function of red button when i hold it about a second s Mobile goes automatically switched off. But somebody told its use is to restart a phone and not for shutdown.. Phone i have is replaced by sony service...
