Since the latest update, I've had an alarm notification pop up on the notification bar that I can't get rid of. Has anyone else encountered this?

That needs to include any and all system apps if your phone is branded, or has operator firmware/apps as well.

If the problem were a system app, would it not affect all phones?
Finding it difficult to understand why this problem is only happening on a limited number of phones?
If for example a Microsoft or Apple update causes issues, it is normally in the newspapers the following day.
Not saying at all that you are not right, just owning up to my stupidity.

I am right, and it may be a user installed app, Tasker for one, I know does that, there's a setting in Monitor - Reliable Alarms, you need to disable, or it puts out the never ending alarm notification to stop being killed by the Android system.
It may be an app installed from a carrier, or on branded software/bloatware.
Then as you say, it would affect only some, and not all.!

Now go into your app tray, open files, and open the phone, and check if you have a "Download" folder.
Sony News Suite has a habit of dumping files of some size in there from time to time.
If you do find them, just delete them.

Uninstalling news suite solved it for me too.
