FDR-AX53 as a Zoom Video conference camera

I have a Microsoft Surface Pro 7 with built in camera. I want to use my Sony video camera as the Zoom video conference camera. Does anybody know how I have to connect it, and do I need any special software? At the moment my Surface Pro is not recognising the Sony FDR-AX53 video camera.

Hello @peneal,

to use a Camcorder as webcam, you need to purchase a hardware device called "HDMI capture card" which is a device you connect your camcorder to which then 'translates' the video signal into one the PC can understand.

Then you can use the camcorder as webcam.

I personally suggest to get the Elgato Camlink, since it has a very good price performance ratio.

Hi peneal,

As far as I know, the camera wasn't officially intended for use as a Webcam so there isn't official documentation of how to get it to work.

Hello Nic

Thanks for your helpful reply. I checked out the Elgato Camlink on the Elgato websiste and they confirm it is compatible with the FDR-AX53 and also have some useful product videos. I have odered the Camlink USB adapter but they are in high demand at the moment and it will be about two weeks before I get it. Will update the post to confirm how well it works. Once again thanks.

Yes, unfortunately that has been the case for the last few weeks. I wonder why

Finally received my 4K Elgato Camlink this week. It works straight out of the box connecting to my MS Surface Pro, and my Sony FDR-AX53 is recognized as a selection option for which camera to use on the Zoom menu. On the menu it appears as 4K Camlink. Not necessary to download any software if you use just for Zoom, but there are free  software packages available on the Elgato website if you want to do more creative stuff. Overall very happy and problem solved.
