no line-in monitoring on vista upgrade of RC102

I have recently upgraded my RC102 to Vista using a clean install. I have downloaded and installed the latest vista drivers etc from the sony site.

It all works as expected apart from the audio. I can play audio files using WMP11 etc but I can not monitor sources plugged into the line-in socket. Furthermore when I select controlpanel/sound/playback/speakers/properties/levels I am offered microphone and CD audio as inputs to monitor but not line-in.

When I uninstall the latest sigmatel driver 6.10.5290.0 and install the last XP driver 5.10.5010.0 I am offered microphone, CD audio and line-in as inputs to monitor and thus can monitor sources plugged into the line-in socket. However, when I come to play audio files using WMP11 it fails, stating that either no sound driver is installed or that it is in use by another device!

What I would like to know is, are others having this problem on their RC102, RC202 or RC204, if not how did they fix it, if so is this a design feature of XP or some ploy to stop audiophiles monitoring recordings!

Hi familyowen and Happy Easter to you.

You are not alone - everyone with a desktop Vaio that came with XP Home or XP Pro and Vaio Zone installed will be having the same problem (RC/RA/RS/V/W2 Series)

Your Audio Line-In connections are processed through the Sony RealTime MPEG Encoder Board (the TV Card)and this is not Vista compliant.

The good news is that Vista support for this analogue TV and AV input is expected to arrive by the end of this month (April)along with support for Vaio Zone.

Good news about Vista support for the Sony RealTime MPEG Encoder Board and Vaio Zone! I have just reinstalled XP after temporarily upgrading to Vista because of the problem detailed in this thread, and lack of TV functionality.

6 weeks have passed since my original post. I have downloaded and installed the vista drivers, utilities and software (in the right order) from the Sony support site, but still no sound!

When I install the original xp drivers (5.10.4618 or 5.10.4717) and then plug my radio into the rear line in jack, I can hear it through my speakers. However, since these are xp drivers, I cannot adjust the heaphone or SPDIF settings fom the sound icon in the system tray.

When I install the new vista drivers (6.10.5290) and plug my radio in to the rea line in jack, I can record the sound but not monitor it through my speakers. However, since these are vista drivers, I can adjust the headphone and SPDIF settings from the desktop. Moreover I can set up my system to play one source through my speakers and a totally differnt source through the headphones.

When I rasied this issue with Sony through their on-line eSupport, they were most unhelpful saying:

"Thank you for contacting us regarding your upgrade to Windows Vista Home Premium. Unfortunately we cannot guarantee that the drivers and utilities on our web site will work with your version of Windows Vista Home Premium. The reason for this, is because we have never tested the vaio with your version of windows.

"Also because the license is with Microsoft then they will provide support with the operating system, we post the drivers and utilities for Vista on our web site. We want to be flexible to our customers needs, but unfortunately if it doesnot work then we cannot support the issue, please contact Microsoft.

"Thank you for your understanding on this matter.

"Best regards

"Sony E-Support Team"

This seems to be saying that had I used the Sony version of Winsdows Vista, I would not have this problem!

When I trawl the web, many people seem to be having the same difficulties with monitoring the line in jack under vista. There must be a solution, has anybody got any ideas?
