Vaio FE41Z Vista & sleep when shutting the lid?

Can anybody tell me how I can set my new laptop to go to sleep AND wake up correctly?

Currently you can shut the lid and something happens as when you open it it's black and you can't get anything to be shown? This is really annoying as I'm moving around and using it with customers - I'm finding I'm having to appologise for the laptop too many times!

Are there also any guides to what services and components can be removed to get some more perfomance out of this as it just appears slow next to my 3 year old compaq! :slight_frown:

Thanks for any help - I would love to get this thing working as good as it looks!

Paul

Hi SARA_G,

Welcome to Club vaio,

Have you installed the FE41Z BIOS update R0200J3

Download and Installation Instructions

1. Download the file "PHBSYS-01101528-UN.exe", and save it to a download directory (e.g. C:\Download).
2. Close all running applications.
3. Click Start - Run - Browse, and browse to the directory where you downloaded the file (e.g. C:\Download\ ).
4. Select the file. Click Open. Then click OK.
5. A window will appear. Click the button Update.
6. Wait while the BIOS is being updated. PLEASE DO NOT INTERRUPT THE PROCESS!
7. When the update is finished, click OK to reboot the computer

How to check the BIOS version

1. Turn on the computer.
2. Press F2 to enter BIOS Setup when Sony Logo appears
3. See "BIOS Version" in main menu.
4. Please verify that the BIOS Version has been correctly updated.
5. Press the F9 key to load default BIOS configuration. Yes is highlighted. Press Enter to confirm.
6. Press the F10 key to save changes and exit. Yes is highlighted. Press Enter to confirm.
7. After this your system will boot again and start up Windows.

Well i got tired waiting for an answer so I just did it and had no problems and my screen doesnt stay black after closing and opening the lid of my laptop. Besides all of this I found some information from NVIDIA about several issues wich they are working on right now.

NVIDIA Vista Graphics Driver Issues
The following are some of the top issues reported by end users that NVIDIA is currently investigating. If you are experiencing this issue, please feel free to submit a new bug report using the descriptions below. NVIDIA is actively working on fixes for these issues.

-At the Windows Vista CTRL-ALT-DEL login screen or when applications that request User Access Control (UAC) there are brief flashes of corruption or flickering.
-On resume from hibernate or sleep, the monitor only shows black but the computer is powered on. This can be worked around by completely turning off your computer and then restarting it.
-With Aero enabled, video playback in Windows Media Center video playback stutters in window mode. This does not occur with Aero disabled or in Fullscreen mode
World of Warcraft has low framerates.
-Windows Vista Ultimate Extras "Texas Hold'Em" in-game flashes at the start of the game.
-While running Aero, the transparency affects on some windows are getting misapplied and can cause horizontal bands of pixel corruption.
-Brightness, contrast, and Gamma values remain the same after opening and closing the NVIDIA Control panel.
-Tiger Woods 2007 during hole fly-by there are black textures rendered.
-When trying to output TV Out over S-Video or HDTV component out, the color is black and white.
-TV Out or HDTV mode is not set after rebooting the computer
-Fan control does not work properly in nTune
-nTune fails to launch due to User Account Control (UAC)
-GPUs cannot be overclocked with nTune.
-LCD Flat Panel Scaling is not functioning properly in the drivers and causes some panels to come up in 800x600 mode.

I bet there are a lot of problems. But it seems to me the BIOS update fixed the problem with getting black screen after opening lid. Yet I still have a short black screen when I press ctrl+alt+del.

Really happy I still have Windows XP installed all these problems. Strange that they did not prepare.

I have run this on my Fe31m and it works a treat. ALSO, I used to have the bios wait for lots of USB items to start before it would boot windows. This bios fixed that issue

yup....BIOS update fixed the screen issue for me. I'm on Vista Ultimate on a FE21M.

I have the same problem with my FE21B - the screen stays blank after shutting the lid. I've updated my bios to the version recommended by Sony (R0172J3), which hasn't corrected the problem, and I'm a bit nervous about trying a bios update that's not designed for my model. Any comments? Thanks

Found this solution on another forum - tested and working: Under device manger, find the "ACPI Lid" driver under "System Devices", right click and select "Update driver software", select Browse my computer for drivers, but choose "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer". Untick "Show compatible hardware", scroll down to the bottom and select "Volume Manager" as driver.

Don't know why it works but it does, and no fiddling with the bios required.
