Vaio FE41Z Vista & sleep when shutting the lid?

Can anybody tell me how I can set my new laptop to go to sleep AND wake up correctly?

Currently you can shut the lid and something happens as when you open it it's black and you can't get anything to be shown? This is really annoying as I'm moving around and using it with customers - I'm finding I'm having to appologise for the laptop too many times!

Are there also any guides to what services and components can be removed to get some more perfomance out of this as it just appears slow next to my 3 year old compaq! :slight_frown:

Thanks for any help - I would love to get this thing working as good as it looks!

Hi Paul,

Welcome to Club Vaio,

In the power options properties > advanced tab > When I close the lid of my personal computer..

If it set to Standby try changing to Hibernate..

If that does not work check in the same place as above that 'When I press the power button on my computer..' is set to Hibernate, then press the power button..

Once in hibernate mode does pressing the power button again allow your vaio to restart..?

Hi Paul,

In Vista you resume from the sleep mode either by pressing the Enter key or by pressing the Power button.

It is usually one or the other so try both (try Enter first!).

If this fails to wake the Vaio up, the Video driver in use may not support Sleep Mode - or there may be a bug in Vista as you are not the first to have mentioned this problem.

If it doesn't work, come back and post again and we will approach Sony about it.

Certainly this and the webcam seem to be common complaints.

EDIT: Sorry, forgot about your other question. If you go to:
Control Panel -> System and Maintenance -> Performance Information and Tools -> Adjust Power Settings
you will get options in both the Visual Effects and the Advanced Tabs to customise for best performance or best appearance. Also in the Advanced tab, if you click on Change Advanced Power Settings you can configure what happens when you select Sleep Mode or when you close the Vaio's lid.

EDIT: Evening Thalamus - I don't use Vista so I could be wrong but I don't think there is a hibernation option in Vista - only Sleep.

Evening to you too, neither do I, so you could very well be correct....

Thanks everyone for the replies!

Using Vista,I've tried a variety of settings within thesection Control Panel > Power options > System Settings. Currently I've every option set to "Do Nothing" but when I close the lid, the screen goes blank and the disk starts running. Re-opening the lid and pressing enter or the poer on button doesn't change anything - the disk light flashes but the screen remains blank. Only a hard power down will resolve it and wake the machine.

The options sleep, hibernate and shut down and do nothing all exist - so far I've tried sleep and do nothing but neither work :slight_frown:

Thanks for the help much appreciated!

That's weird. My FE41Z has no problems going into standby and coming out of it. When I press the power button, it goes to sleep. When I want to resume, pressing any key starts it up again.

Thanks for the re-assurance that others are OK.

Unfortunately it doesn't solve this laptops issues. I wonder if there has been a driver update or bios update that has resulted in his new behaviour? The machine is only 20 days old but the problem has reared it's head too many times so far.

Best Regards,

Paul.

That is exactly what happens with my FE41S! All of the options including:

1. When I press the power button
2. When I press the sleep button
3. When I close the lid

They are all set to "Do Nothing". Yet on closing the lid the screen goes blank but the computer stays on. Then NOTHING will get the screen display on again except holding down the power button to turn it off then startin it up again! Its VERY frustratin!

Thanks guys, jack.

Do remember that Vista has a new way of sleeping -- once you press the power button or close the lid, the machine will turn off the monitor initially, and there can be up to 3-5 minutes of activity after that as the system goes into sleep/hibernate mode.

My FE41Z has exactly the same problem. With mine I dock the laptop to use at my desk, so I obviously close the lid if I'm using my 2nd monitor. The only way I can get the laptop monitor back on is either to restart the machine or undock it.

Could be a driver issue with the Nvidia drivers. Unless anyone else has the same problem on a different laptop using none nVidia Graphics.
