i have exactly the same problem as the other people who have written about this tv model on the forum and there seems to be manty many more out thereon forums reporting the same problem that sony will not acknowledge.
there are dark lines running down my screen and a dark shadow line about an inch think on the right hand side of my screen, this was more noticable when watching football. my tv is not under warrranty anymore but is only 2 and a 1/2 years old. it seems that sony have created their screens to only last this long as lots of people have the same complaint.
i have just rang sony and i have been told that "there is no known problems with this model" that is rubbish as clearly there are a few of us just on this forum with the same pronblem. So we are paying about £1000 for a tv that will only last 2.5 years. i am disgusted with the lack of help and support from the sony call centre staff who basically said i need to get it fixed myself and i need to book it in with a service engineer. I suspect this is a problem with the panel or with the screen where a replace ment would cost you more than getting a new set. it would cost me £45 just for someone to come out and tell me that without even having it repaired. as a dedicated sony buyer over the years i cannot believe that my most expensive buy has only lasted 2.5 years.
WHY IS SONY NOT DOING ANYTHING ABOUT THIS PROBLEM??
My latest official reply from the Sony support email is a standard reply that my TV is out of warranty and I will have to pay for the repair myself. This is after they told me I would need to pay to have my TV looked at by one of their service agents.
I have still NOT had any response to the 3 (THREE) emails I have sent to the referrals email address provided by Lee (StartTheCar)..
I'm completely on the same page. I had a Sony engineer come out this week to replace the bits that were going up in flames. He also checked the screen and said that the smokey lines are caused by a faulty LCD panel.
I sent this to Sony customer service along with a job number etc, and they've now come back saying that I need a written quote and they may offer some goodwill towards repair. I called the engineer asking for this and they will need to come out again but this time want £50 for doing so!
There's no way I'm throwing good money after bad when I've already been told by a sony engineer that the part is faulty and it will cost circa £500 to repair.
Unfortunately it's the end of the road for me. I've wasted far too much time on this already and the only thing I have left is to ensure no-one I know ever buys a Sony product again. It's a powerful thing this social networking stuff
What a cheeky rip off! The engineers came and checked the inverter, which was simply measuring the impedance of a transformer. If it is too high then it is a fire risk. As for my dark lines they said it was a panel defect and was not covered. I then got a call from ICTV sony’s agent to say there are no panels left and they could replace the TV with a modern equivalent for £530 inc VAT, special price. The panel used to be £250 and I can buy a new equivalent TV for £450! What a swizz!

I started having this same problem about 2/3 weeks ago on my KDL40V3000 and decided to e-mail Currys about my issue.
They've since been in rouch and told me about the recall etc. I actually purchased the TV in Dec '08.
The TV's been booked by the Sony service centre for Mon 31/10/11 and I've got a sneaky suspicion that they're going to respond with the same crap they've been giving everyone else.
I will fight and would expect the rest of you guys too as this is more than just COMMON, the sales of goods act of 1979 states you have six years from the date of purchase to claim damages for faulty goods. (With the retailer off course)
Take a look at this: http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/theoneshow/consumer/2009/07/03/sale_of_goods_act_letter_downl.html
I've attached some pictures of the problems I am having and will try to update you with what comes back. (Sorry about the quality!)

welcome to the club, please fill out the bbc watchdog form regarding your TV set.
This definately a problem with this model. It seems that the average life of the screen is 2.5 years. I am lucky because I had a 5 year warranty and therefore sony have no choice but to repalce this. The engineers who came to look at it played dumb saying that they had come across 1 or 2 beofre but were not sure. So I had to email them photos.
Unfortunately I might end up with a newer but poorer quqlity replacement.
Same here too, a three and a half year old KDL-40V3000 with shadows all across the screen and a repair bill of £579.00. It started about 6 months ago, very faint at first but then got steadily worse, until now i have a very well defined 3 inch wide shadow all down the right hand side of the screen with various other shadows across the rest of the screen of varying intensity.
Just heard back from the Sony Customer Information Centre, after sending them a copy of my original reciept and a repair estimate from a Sony authorised repair centre, and let me just mention that figure agian if i may £579.00, their response was..........
I can confirm that there are no known inherent faults with the LCD panel of this particular TV. Unfortunately on this ocassion I cannot offer any goodwill towards the repair of your TV.
Please accept my apologies for any further disappointment that this reply may cause.
Disappointment doesn't quite cover what i'm curently feeling towards Sony. I believe someone further down this discussion suggested that everyone experiencing this problem should get together, so to speak, and contact Sony en-mass, I think this is a good idea.
Hi just joined this site , Just bought new Tv and was just about to sell my old sony bravia KDL-40V300 and was looking it on internet to see what info i needed to sell it , im glad i did as found out I had the same fault as the rest of you with shadowing on the screen .
I then found out it could be a fire risk!! im glad i did not pass it on or sell it and the posible fire risk!
i will be contacting sony for my free inspection to see if its one of the affected models, also will be contacting currys under sale of goods act as should not of been faulty after 2 half yrs .
Hi
Another KDL 40v3000 owner with problems, the set is nearly 3 years old - left side of screen has gone faulty just showing vertical lines over almost half the entire screen I bought the set from John Lewis so fortunately it has a 5 year warranty. Engineer has just been out and says it needs a new screen which should be fitted in a weeks time, but I am a bit dubious after reading some of these posts whether this will be the case.
He says he has changed about 6 of these screens so surely sony will have to accept that there is an inherent problem.
