Xperia Z - micro USB port weak point

The micro USB port on my z has stopped receiving charge and won't even allow the charger to be plugged into it any more.

The port is uniform in shape which doesn't allow you to know which way round to plug the charger, so you have to guess. Guessing places stress on the pins inside the port. In my case, they seem to have suffered because of this (imho) design fault. USBs can only be inserted one way round, so the user needs to know which way to insert it.

I am wondering if this will be a common weak spot on these phones once they have been in circulation a while?

There is an unexpected shortage of the sony Xperia Z Dock (DK26) at the moment, which will enable you to charge the phone without using the micro usb port. It makes you wonder how many people are having this issue and how much money sony is making due to that fault. Maybe it was part of there strategy to creat this design flaw and then, make everyone buy the docks or pay for a new phone or use their software for wireless transfer. In any case, I am not impressed!

This is a very common issue on this particular device, it is a shame that Sony do not accept this repair under warranty. We can successfully repair the device with a brand new genuine part. This repair is NOT BER (beyond economic repair) as Sony warranty repair centres claim, the part costs us around 60 pence to buy and we offer a complete repair service including the parts, handling, fitting, testing and return delivery by 1st class recorded post for only £29. The reason we are offering such a competitve price is that we feel Sony is being unfair to their customers. Please visit us or find us on google.

Just an update as I posted a few months ago now. I am getting no joy from O2 whatsoever so have now made a formal written complaint requesting a new phone or to be released from my contract as I no longer wish to do business with them. In the mean time Sony have now had my phone for 6 weeks!!! Following the first repair inspection I was told that it was BER, but before I could make a complaint I was advised to let them send it for an independent second opinion which they have now done and unsurprisingly still BER.

I have been promised that they will send my phone back to me free of charge as a good will gesture as they have taken so long but that was a week ago and still no sign of my Xperia. On the plus side if they lose it at least they will have to replace it!

Once again, I encourage all those based in the UK to log a complaint on the BBC watch dog website, if there are enough of us they are more likely to investigate on our behalf.

In reponse to Gary's comment regarding the fact that these types of phones should be docked, that's great but since I am not into gadgets the thought had not crossed my mind and if that's the case you should be advised of such when you buy the phone. So not a particulalry helpful comment when all of us are now phone less! Should I ever find myself with a fully functioning Xperia Z again (please note I would never consider buying one of these again!) I will of course dock it.

Like many of you I have a broken socket on my xperia z, sony say this is not covered by the warrant. I firmly believe thus is a design fault. I have contacted BBC tv's watchdog programme. They have received a significant number of complaints concerning this fault. They are willing to pursue this but need more evidence. So please anyone in the UK who has been told by sony they their socket is not covered by the warranty please use this link to tell the programme makers your story.

Just wondering if anyone with a broken mini USB port has had any luck charging through a docking station? I have bought one but it does not work. Can see why is doesn't as the phone docking point is nowhere near the USB port. Wondering it it is the docking staion and not the phone.

FYI update, in 20 days I will be commencing legal procedings against 02 for supplying me with a phone that is not fit for the pupose for which it is intended. The frustration continues........

If you look at the connector phone end on one side you can see a symbol, this faces up when you plug it in. ie when looking down on the screen.it looks like three cables going into one.

Please dont buy Sony Xperia Z or any series of Xperial Smartphones. My Xperia Z stopped charging suddenly, when I took to service centre they said water has entered the USB Charging port and has caused Damaged, I really not aware how the water traces went inside the USB Port, this has disbaled the Port function and stopped charging.. rest of the functions are working fine.

Sony aithorised service centre demands 80% of the cost of the phone to get the mother board replaced as they say this is only the option . The same USB Charging port is availble as a spare in US and China at 4 US$... No solution from Sony yet how they will repair my xperia Z.. this is the failure model...no service available from Sony for Xperia Smartphones. Please dont buy any product from Sony
