Xperia Z - micro USB port weak point

The micro USB port on my z has stopped receiving charge and won't even allow the charger to be plugged into it any more.

The port is uniform in shape which doesn't allow you to know which way round to plug the charger, so you have to guess. Guessing places stress on the pins inside the port. In my case, they seem to have suffered because of this (imho) design fault. USBs can only be inserted one way round, so the user needs to know which way to insert it.

I am wondering if this will be a common weak spot on these phones once they have been in circulation a while?

I'm soooo angry! Waiting to speak to a supervisor from Vodafone and am going to tell him/her, no way am I paying 50% of the replacement fee, when it's obvious Sony stuffed up with the charger socket. I was going to get a Sony for my son, but after this experience and after reading these comments here...NO WAY

Hi all,Just sent my xperia z off to the sony repair centre today for exactly the same reason, the charging pin has snapped off and is stuck in the micro usb lead(and yes i was putting it in the right way).it's obviously a design flaw and they can **** right off if they expect me to pay a large ammount of money..Iam more than willing to go all the way to consumer court if need be,oh and i will be more than happy to add my story to bbcs watchdog site also i suggest everyone does.

Will be back with verdict very soon

Hi Rob,

Welcome to the queue of disgruntled Xperia users. We also have a facebook group now as well https://www.facebook.com/groups/1411717545728835/ do join.

I have given O2 28 days notice of legal proceedings which are due to commence on 20th Dec. They supplied me with the phone so I am tackling them first for supplying an item "not fit for the purpose for which is was intended". Good luck with your efforts I post my updates reguarly and I am certainly not giving up.

Did you purchase the Sony Xperia Z DK26 Charging Dock? I have recently received mine and it is working fine except that I no longer have micro USB port functionality. However, it took me one month to get the dock and meanwhile my phone was out of action for that long. Good luck with the court proceedings.

Also, please find below the an image of the part which needs to be replaced. As I mentioned in my previous comments. The part cost is really cheap so I con't know why Sony is charging so much for the repairs. In my opinion, it is just a really poor design.SXZB11-1024x576.jpg

The round part of the micro usb should be facing upworld in other words the same way as the screen side is on.

Hi everyone !

I also have a sony xperia & the same problem has happened to me after 2 months of its usage. It was initially having some charging problem & one day the charging pin broke off. When i took the phone to service station, they asked for Rs 17000 bucks to replace the phone as it can't be repaired.

I tried hard to persude them that it shall be taken under warranty but everything in vain.

Then i heard about wireless charging in Xperia z. I tried to take confirmation from sony that my phone will be able to charge through this device or not. They are not providing any support on this issue.

Can anybody provide there feedback on the wireless dock available for Xperia Z in market. Will i be able to charge my phone again even if the charging pin has broken off ? Pl provide your inputs

I too had the same problem , I had a faulty charger so I though , took it to the Optus shop and the sales assistance bent the pin due to force . Two weeks later it snapped off. Optus paid for the repair $ 748 later I was not paying at all! that wad in the first two months. I am so paranoid of the pin I even dread to charge it or even let the kids play or touch it... Not a very nice experience to have this model to be honest. Slightly_frowning_Face already looking forward to an upgrade to another asap

Finally heard back from the "so called" sony repair centre and they have said what i expected and its my fault the micro usb port just fell out despite charging the correct way,and the invoice didnt even offer a repair just a demand for £14.40 for postage to return the sorry excuse of a phone which is the XPERIA Z.

Anyhow im going to get in touch with trading standards and see what they say as there is so so many peaple having the same problem and sony need to sort this out as its clearly a major design flaw.

Well thats my first and last mobile from sony and any other sony product for that matter, its cheap e end of.
