Xperia Z - micro USB port weak point

The micro USB port on my z has stopped receiving charge and won't even allow the charger to be plugged into it any more.

The port is uniform in shape which doesn't allow you to know which way round to plug the charger, so you have to guess. Guessing places stress on the pins inside the port. In my case, they seem to have suffered because of this (imho) design fault. USBs can only be inserted one way round, so the user needs to know which way to insert it.

I am wondering if this will be a common weak spot on these phones once they have been in circulation a while?

Very disappointed never though with Sony being a longterm company with electronics would have such poor support for defective phones first my phone had the sudden death problem and would not turn back on then usb port brakes off after only having replacement for a month of use and now i have to buy a docking charger or pay replacement insurance which is $150 on top of $600 i already paid for cell phone pathetic customer service from both cellphone company's and Sony. Cant believe there is even a fb page with angry and upset customers because Sony will not tell 3rd party cell company's this is a manufacture issue and should replace phones but if ps4 are faulty they get replaced right away even tho they cost $200 less than there cell phones .I can only say i will not buy another cellphone from them and they should stick to making Tvs and game consoles don't make products you wont back up or replace for poor performance unless you want to continue getting bad reputation

Hi Guys,

Compliments of the Season. All the best for 2014. (less problematic phones would be great)

I own a Sony Xperia Z for 3 months now and my USB was working fine, no issues until one day it refused to charge.

Its on contact so i took it to the network provider Vodacom , who sent it on to SSS Cellular. They advised me i have to pay +/- ZAR 1100.00 to get it fixed.

I dont think its fair. as the phone is under warrenty. I havent damaged it. and it seems to be a common problme here.

Im not happy with the way Voda has handled the matter. Any ideas on what i should do?

I refuse to pay. Its unfair. As its a common problem. Like iPhone users have this "too thin pin" problem.

Thanks for reading, advise always welcome.

I have a sony xperia z which has a broken charger port through no fault of my own. I sent it to the repair centre only to be told it can't be fixed. It is obvious from this forum and others on the internet that this is a common problem. My mobile phone contract has another 18 months to run and i have no phone. The three network have been very un helpful and offered me another phone at a cost of £300. I have written to sony and am awaiting their reply.

Oh dear. I have the same problem after 6 Months. I knew I was charging the phone correctly and without force, but it's the same old sorry story - the metal pin came with the charger the last time I charged it. I returned it on Saturday to Sony in UK and they emailed today (Thursday 23/01/2014) to confirm it was received yesterday.

I don't hold out much hope, but if they won't repair or replace I'll escalate as a complaint and try to get them to return it without charge, then buy a charging dock.

I'll give them the benefit of the doubt in the first instance, and I'll report back here either way.

By all means if they do not accept liability, I will report to BBC Watchdog and take to small claims court as it is most definitely not fit for purpose.

The best they will do is send it back free of charge(see my previous posts) once you have it escalated to a complaint.

What i would do is report it to watchdog as i and many other people have and hopefully it will be exposed on tv.

P.S i bought a charging dock off ebay for a tenner inc free delivery and it works fine, hope this helps......rob

Thanks for that Rob.

I've tracked the repair progress using the repair ref and IMEI and the details are as follows:  Warrenty reason: broken device / physcal damage. Customer fault: electrical - no charging connector. Warrenty: in warrenty but BER. The status is: sent for quotation- so I expect they will respond with a quote even though it's clearly a fault with the phone.

Once they contact me to confirm BER I'll speak to Sony to escelate a complaint. I'll go ahead and buy a charging doc now so at least I can charge it once it's been returned. Not a happy customer so I will report to BBC Watchdog if it's not replaced or repaired.

BTW sorry if any confusion - I posted the reply above Rob's under Moo 81. I was having trouble logging on but was able to do so after changing my username.

Same here - phone less than 30 days old.  Brought it back to Bell Canada - my fault and place in the mall said $80 but since its waterproof it might be repairable. So now looking for a docking station in Ontario Canada.

This is not a new issue but I was wondering if Sony has recognized the problem. The charging port on my xperia z c6606, has a major flaw in that it is not shaped to match the shape of the plug on the USB cable. Therefore you can plug in the USB cable the wrong way which causes damage to the port and the plug leaving you with a device that won't charge.

are many angry people posting online about this problem because mobile carriers as well as Sony itself are calling this damage caused by the user and therefore are not honoring the warranty. I contacted Sony today and was told it sounded like damage caused by misuse which is not covered by warranty, but that I could send the phone at my expense to a Sony repair center to be evaluated.

I find it hard to believe that after so much outcry by a very many owners of this device, that Sony has no basis for making this a known flaw and agreeing to a recall and repair.

anyone else with this issue had any luck in dealing with mobile carriers or Sony as to a resolution?

I will be taking my phone in to tmobile in the morning to try my luck with them.
