Xperia Z - micro USB port weak point

The micro USB port on my z has stopped receiving charge and won't even allow the charger to be plugged into it any more.

The port is uniform in shape which doesn't allow you to know which way round to plug the charger, so you have to guess. Guessing places stress on the pins inside the port. In my case, they seem to have suffered because of this (imho) design fault. USBs can only be inserted one way round, so the user needs to know which way to insert it.

I am wondering if this will be a common weak spot on these phones once they have been in circulation a while?

I am starting a new thread in the hope that someone at Sony might take notice and actually respond to this with a suitable resolution.  I am aware that there are other threads on this matter (one with 17 pages of disgruntled users) but I do not see anywhere that Sony have responded.

I have a Sony Xperia Z which I got on contract from Virgin in December 2013.  The very first time I went to plug it in to charge, I discovered rather a large design flaw in that the plug shape does not match the socket shape - so there is no way to tell which way round the plug should be inserted, except throuhg trial and error.  This is obviously, going to place strain on the socket pin as if it is inserted the wrong way round it is going to damage the pin.

My phone has had problems since a couple of months after I got it but I made sure I was always careful with how I inserted the plug as I knew which way it should go in.  Now it seems that one of the pins has come off and it refuses to charge.  I have never managed to successfully connect it to my pc so have been unable to back anything up as it just won't connect due to the faulty port, instead I have had to rely on using my SD card for pretty much everything so I am now faced with the prospect of losing all the data on my phone (including all my contacts).

I am rather alarmed to read all the stories on here, and elsewhere online, from other customers who have had the same problem and had their repair under warranty rejected when the faulty port has been deemed as 'accidental damage'.  This is not acceptable!  The port had been reported as being an issue since the Z was released and it is clearly a design error, and not a customer error.

I would like to know what Sony propose to do to rectify this as I am about to send my phone away for repair with Virgin and I am most concerned, in light of everything I have read on this forum and elsewhere, that I am probably going to be told that the repair is chargeable!

I can totally sympathise with you about your phones issue. Thinking this looked like a great phone, I bought 2 of them and ended up taking parts from 2 Xperia Z's to make one after a year. Now the second unit's micro USB has broken. Sony service is the worst I have ever dealt with....and I used to work for a wireless carrier for 12 years. Dont even waste your time with them as you will get absolutely nowhere. Sony DOES NOT CARE about the problem in this community blog, they just give us this place to vent. Your only option is to find and buy a Sony DK26 charging dock or try the trick I found on you tube, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h9Mw0C_fDqU. You can charge the phone this way while waiting for the backordered DK26. (Gosh, I wonder why they are backordered! It's because every Xperia Z customer globally will have this issue eventually.) Sony mobile...never again!

Had the same problem. Sent for repair under warranty. Told that the damage is not a manufacturing fault, so not under warranty.  The charging pins came out with the Sony supplied cable. Complained repeatedly but no support other than to send me a photo of the damaged port.

Common problem yet Sony refuses to acknowledge and simphy state not a manufacturing fault.  Given a quotation of 132 pounds.

Phone now being returned un repaired .  PLEASE DO NOT BUY SONY MOBILE PHONES ANYMORE.

Quality of  Sony service has become shoddy and not surprising Sony mobile is being sold by Sony Corporation.

Do not bother sending the phone to Sony as their service is useless.  If you have a faulty charging port, you can buy a new charging dock (DK26 for Xperia Z) for less than 5 pounds on ebay which uses the magnetic pins on the phone (the gold colour points on the side of the phone).  This is much better option given the useless charging ports that are on the phone. You can charge the phone and also sync. i bought it and the phone is charging through the magnetic points  and  not using the charging port pins whcih are broken.

Far better option and dirt cheap less than 5 pounds compared to 132 pound repair offer by Sony.

There is a DK26 magnetic charger that does not use the usb port, but tranfering pictures will still be an issue. I paid more for this expecting Sony to provide a better product and now I will be looking elsewhere for quality electronics as Sony is not supporting an obvious design flaw.

make sure the usb sign indicated on the head of the usb cable (the side inserted into the phone's usb port) is facing the sky or ur ceiling.

With virgin mobile and after 2 hours of complaining it is not my fault virgin still refuse to fix my sony xperia z1. I am now taking this to a small claims court, watchdog and citizen advice. Never going with sony again considering I have had problems with my sony vaio and sony bravia tv. The reason for this is more than likely that it is not made in Japan anymore and is made in Taiwan/China instead.
