Hi Zero3hero and all,
If the device has IP68 CERTIFICATION, that means that you can dive in into water no deeper than 1.5 meters, no longer than 30 minutes, under no extra pressure conditions (avoid harsh shaking under water or strong direct streams to avoid extra local pressure), exactly what your friend did. Good advice is not to do it, but MANY people bought this phone for those waterproof capabilities, and it is NOT ACCEPTABLE that sony voids warranty if you do it, as it is a warranty law violation. They hang on the fact that you might have gone scuba diving with it, and you cannot prove it after all, this policy of "your word against mine, I'm a company you are an individual, you lose" for me is far from a reputated company.
Another thing, there were plenty of commercials from sony with people jumping into the swimming pool not in a gentle way precisely. Well, in most serious countries, capabilities shown in commercials vinculates (i.e. binds) to warranty. That's why sony after so many complaints deleted those commercials from everywhere.
Regards

The 3.5mm input should not be covered. It is waterproof itself, as it has a membrane to protect it against water immersion. However this has been asked before.

Yup I sure do remember those days when Sony was advertising this phone and the ingress protection rating. This was one feature that sold me on going with a Z3 and almost immediately after release alot of people were making complaints about water bypassing the seals and ports and destroying their devices, only to find out warranty won't cover it because they were found to be at fault. I never wanted to take my phone and intentionally dunk it or go swimming with it or anything stupid like that, but I figured....great at least I know I have a phone that can get a little wet if I was ever caught in rain or accidentally got water on it some other way and it would be okay.
To this day I have never got my phone wet period! Not even to clean it off. I'm too scared with all the problems it already has, I don't need another one.
It was kind of funny to see Sony's damage control efforts in trying to remove all adds and commercials though. And changing their claim about proper use in wet conditions.

Yes... The thing that really busts on me is how bombastic they were about the waterproof (epic fail) and all that bragging about its robustness. I had a 2 identical samsung which were terrible software wise and fragile (screen cracked but fully operative after small fall), that's why I said, I'm gonna go to a great phone, and then I went to Z3, which I liked about performance, but it broke itself not even after one month, and the water issue I'm sorry, is a rip off. Now I'm using a Nokia N8, which I stopped using it as symbian support was stopped since Nokia was acquired by Microsoft, leading to obsolete software, but hard as stone, and with a camera miles better than Z3...
