I'm the same as many others here.
At first it was the swipe down menu that started playing up and just recently my botton soft touch buttons have stopped working when unlocked, yet they work fine when the phone is locked so definitely not a hardware problem. Also, the back, home and the other soft key buttons still don't work when in landscape mode so it can't be the screen. I don't recall my phone updating but I did notice that around the same time it was suddenly prompting me for ICE contact information so something must have updated in the background.
I've tried all the suggested solutions with no success except for a factory reset because I don't think it will work, so what's the point of giving myself all the hassle of installing my apps, email setup etc.
I'm very disappointed with Sony's lack of action on this because the swipe down menu issue happened quite a while ago so they have had plenty of time to start addressing whatever is causing this.
At the moment the only way my phone is still useable is by having it in glove mode but even that struggles.
It's a shame as I like the phone and it's been very reliable for what has been almost two years now I think. I'm not sure what's going on with Sony at the moment but the Sony 4K TV I bought recently kept powering down and freezing etc so I changed it for a faultless Panasonic one. I also recently bought a Sony Blu-Ray player which wouldn't even power up unless you quickly pressed the eject button but the moment you powered it down it wouldn't power up again. I replaced it for a Panasonic one and once again it's been faultless.
Not sure what phone to go with next, it's a business contract with Orange so the models available is limited. I used to have Samsungs but they had a few annoying issues also such as GPS problems. I would prefer to stay with Sony but I'm losing trust with them fast.
Hi Everyone! Same Here with my Z3 compact:
Has anyone tried Cyanogen / Lineage OS / AOSP as a solution? What are the results?
Argh, why does it happen to me also two weeks ago? This is my first Android phone and my first Sony smart phone after the Walkman phone. I have visited support center and I was told to replace the screen which costs half of the phone itself. As some of the replies suggest, this IS NOT hardware issue, since the buttons are responsive on screen lock.
Hi
My z3 compact .. no issues for 2 years since Ive had the phone. I Stopped using the device After I upgraded to a new device.
Today I switched the phone on [ prior to the last switch off , the device was reset to factory defaults ] and below is what happened.
The worst bit of this whole scenario is that after checking the phone I would have been on my way to sell this phone to computer exchange [ uk.webuy.com ]
Sony must take ownership of this issue and provide a resolution.. Im more than happy to provide my device for logs / diagnostics .. as its pretty much useless.
Back and Home button doesn't work or only after litterally dozens of tries
Screen works fine, the buttons on the same spot in lock screen have no problems
Tested:
Lineage OS does not have official support of this model yet
Nothing works
Started happening to me as well. Notification bar a month or two ago, back/home button a few weeks later.
I'd assumed it was a hardware issue but now I'm wondering!
Same thing just happened on my Z3 Compact. I suspet this is software related as I can see and use the mic, lock, and camera icons on the bottom of the screen when I press the power button to unlock the phone. These icons use the same screen space as the back, home, and other button on the right ( not sure what it's called ).
Installing a " back button " app works fine until an update fixes it.

Only solution provided is to get the "broken" part/s replaced.
An expensive phone that gets broken under normal use circumstances. -Xperia phones
The digitiser on my Z3C has failed.
Should I be shocked that when I came to research this issue, I found a TON of people with the exact same thing??
I've owned many, many touchscreen devices, and this SONY phone, is the only device ever to have developed a digitiser issue. In fact, I can't think of any other touch device I've owned that has developed any issue that stopped me from selling it on or trading in complete working order.
I can't prove with numbers, but just by the sheer amount of posts on the net involving failed digitizer issues with Xperia phones, should SONY not be confirming this issue as an unacceptable quality control fumble, and repairing all affected devices as a matter of courtesy?
The parts or manufacturing involved are simply not fit for purpose.
